Staff Spotlight: Village Manager at Alpine View Lifestyle Village
We caught up with Andrew Mustoe, Village Manager at Alpine View Lifestyle Village, to talk about what life in a village really looks like day to day—and it’s not about slowing down, it’s about living well with choice, confidence, and ease. From thoughtful design and practical support to a strong sense of community, Andrew shares how village living is all about helping residents stay independent, active, and in control of the life they want to live.
When people think about independence, they often think it means doing everything themselves. How do you see independence in a village setting?
Independence in a village setting isn’t about doing everything alone, it’s about having the freedom to choose how you live your day, with the reassurance that support is there if you want it. I see independence as confidence with backup. Residents can maintain their routines, hobbies, and social lives, but they’re not isolated. They have options, not obligations.
What are some of the small, everyday ways the village is designed to make life easier for residents?
A lot of thought goes into the small details. Wider doorways, well-lit pathways, and easy-access bathrooms all make a real difference. Maintenance is taken care of, so there’s no worrying about lawns or repairs. Even simple things—like having amenities close by, organised activities, or transport options—remove everyday hassles and give residents more time and energy to enjoy what they like doing.
How does living in a village give residents that extra layer of confidence?
There’s a real sense of reassurance that comes from knowing help is nearby if needed. Whether it’s emergency call systems, staff on-site, or simply having neighbours close by, residents often tell me they feel more secure than they did living on their own. That peace of mind builds confidence—they’re more willing to stay active, go out, and try new things because they don’t feel alone.
How do you strike the balance between offering support and making sure residents still feel in control of their own routines and choices?
It’s about offering support in a way that’s resident led. We don’t step in unless someone asks or there’s a clear need. People choose how involved they want to be—whether that’s joining activities, using services, or keeping to themselves. Respecting personal routines and preferences is key. Our role is to enable, not direct.
For someone considering a move, what would you say to reassure them that they can maintain their independence—and even feel more confident day to day?
Moving into a village often enhances independence rather than taking it away. By removing the burdens—like home upkeep and isolation—you actually gain more freedom to focus on what matters to you. And with that added layer of security and community, many people find they feel more confident, more connected, and more in control of their day-to-day life than they expected.
